Balenciaga, Coming Back to Paris

After three years with New York-based Alexander Wang as anchor-man, Balenciaga has returned home to Europe, naming the 34-year-old Georgian Gvasalia as new creative head at the brand. In fashion circles Gvasalia has set off a storm of bold ideas and established himself as a unique talent for deconstructed fashion with an enviable fan base that includes Kanye West.

Before leading design teams at Maison Martin Margiela and Louis Vuitton, Gvasalia learned his fashion skills at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp in Belgium. He is now based in Paris, where he is primarily known for his work for Vetements, the anonymous Parisian fashion collective that was one of the most hyped labels to emerge in Paris in recent seasons. The new artistic director of Balenciaga is also known for his gang of underground creatives, including Dazed contributing fashion editor and stylist Lotta Volkova Adam. For Gvasalia, his friends are his primary source of inspiration, so it will be very interesting to see how he will convert to the Balenciaga universe.

We’re super excited to see Gvasalia’s inaugural show this March, but we know he will bring with him a fascinating blend of atelier experience, street savvy – and Lotta Volkova Adam, who styled and stormed the catwalk at the Vetements SS16 show wearing a long leather coat.
