I met with the two talented designers behind the Swedish brand, COS, while I was in London. We had a little chat about the brand, their inspiration and their favorites from the fall collection – meet Karin Gustafsson and Martin Andersson.
What makes COS different from other brands?
Karin: “We first of all focus on good quality at affordable prices. “
Martin: “We want to create collections that are timeless and lasts in the wardrobe more than one season. We give the basic wardrobe essential modernity by changing the proportions or the finish. ”
Where do you get your inspiration?
Karin: “We attend to look towards modern art, interior design and architecture. It is all about what we have seen and experienced in that period – we always start with a blank canvas and just throw ideas on the table we start building directions. ”
Martin: I especially really like Bauhaus, because it’s so timeless and truly beautiful. The great thing about it is that you can see it from different eyes every season and find new things from it. It can also be buildings that we’ve seen on the streets – the way they are positioned or a meeting between something old and new.”
What are the COS tendencies this fall?
Karin: “We really like how the autumnal colors feel together with organic and natural materials. We also like the traditional utility wear and have given them a modern look. We also see lots of tailoring, but in a more relaxed shape by using new materials.”
COS are famous for the Scandinavian minimalistic approach in terms of both interior and design, will that ever change? Or is that your DNA no matter how the tendencies change?
Martin: ” There is a big interest in the Scandinavian minimalist approach towards design and I don’t think that it will ever change. We like the idea of making styles that has longevity – if you buy a coat it should last for 3 winters in stead of one and lends itself to a very simple and functional design aesthetic.”
Which items from the fall collection are your favorites?
Karin: My favorite is a tweed wool coat in a brownish and grey color – it is oversized with collapsing tailoring”
Martin: ” I love the flight jacket in grey boiled wool with a big teddy collar. The quality is amazing and it’s all raw cut with exposed seems.”
